Why do you fall off the wagon?
There are so many reasons this happens, but there's usually a basic underlying reason.
What is yours? Your handle will show up with this vote, but only for discussion reasons. |

I eat carbs mostly when I'm not doing well emotionally.
Unfortunately depression is a close enemy of mine. I fight it daily. And boy do those chocolate carbs call me "home" when I'm struggling. So, yes, depression is the reason I carb out.

And you've probably read my post and know that chocolate is a great seratonin booster!
B-6 and chromium picolinate work wonders for me and help keep the saddie baddies away. {{{TR}}} Have I told you you ab fab rock today?! |

Re: Why do you fall off the wagon?
I'm bad (or good, depending on how you look at it) at justifying giving myself something I want. What if I died tomorrow? If I don't look out for myself, who will? No one cares as much about my happiness as I do. See?
![]() I'm not sure if it's a product of growing up with instant gratification or if I'm trying to self-medicate something. That saying about knowing is half the battle? Yeah, there's still half the battle to go... Laura

Re: Why do you fall off the wagon?
I fall off when I feel overwhelmed and stressed. I plan and have good things on hand and then I still CHOOSE to be overwhelmed and fall off. It is all emotions, and we girls tend to run deep with emotions. I am learning that I need to be true to myself and to be faithful to me. When I stop making choices that are in my best interest, I need to stop and re-evaluate what is going on. I am back here today because my new skinny clothes I bought this Fall are not as fitting as they were then. So I am making better choices and will stay true to me.
Because sometimes it IS about me! (That is me stopping the blame game ... life is unfair, get over it, everyone feels that way!). But one of the best results of choosing wisely is friends like you on this board. This is where the love and support is! And for that I thank you! |

Re: Why do you fall off the wagon?
I couldn't choose just one of those reason either. I'd say the two main ones for me are depression and special occasions. For 2 years now, I had a planned cheat on Thanksgiving. I thought if I could make it that long, I'd treat myself. The first year, I really thought I could eat all that stuff and get back on Atkins. I couldn't. Then last year, I thought I had a better mindset to do it. Nope. So this year there is no planned cheats. I'll have the turkey. I will pass on the stuffing and potatoes. Not even a taste becaseu if I do, I know I'm done for.

Re: Why do you fall off the wagon?
I said "stressed" because it seemed to cover more situations than others, but I'm a multi-reason person when I fall off. I'm just coming back after a major landslide and have been great for eleven days now. I feel that I have a handle on it this time with the stress excuse!

Re: Why do you fall off the wagon?
Way to go! Yeah, stress is a toughie! What fixed that issue for me was knowing that even when my thighs are so firm I could make concrete jealous, the world would still be filled with the same stressors there are now. Thinness never guarantees happiness. It just guarantees new opportunities to grow as someone who is taking this weight off for life in a smaller body.

Seriously, though. Nothing in life becomes magical if you just lose the weight, just get the job, just find the perfect guy, just whatever you're hoping will finally make you happy. You have to find a way to be happy with what you've got and who you are. I had my aha! moment when a friend said "What have you got to complain about? I'd love to be you." And I was thinking "Whatever for?!" That started me thinking - if someone thought *my* life was something to aspire to, who wasn't to say that those I envied weren't in the same position I was? And maybe I should start appreciating what I *did* have, since others might not have even that. So I take a moment to breathe deeply and enjoy the sunlight on my face. Be grateful my car starts in the morning. Snuggle with a pet who loves me unconditionally. It may be trite, but there is something about stopping to smell the roses. Laura P.S. Was that too pollyanna? lol

Re: Why do you fall off the wagon?
I ate off plan on Christmas, because I'm pretty much at goal. I figure this is a way of life. Self control with carbs has never been an issue for me, and I'm not really an emotional eater. Just eating too much in general, low carb or not, is my problem. I had 3 pieces of biscotti, 2 chocolates and a slice of apple pie at my xmas dinner. That was xmas day..there was a xmas party the week before with a couple of cookies as well. I gained a few pounds, and dropped it within a week or so.
It was quite liberating actually. I was the worlds biggest carbphobic until recently..when i accidnetly drank vodka coolers i though were sugar free and weren't. 250g's worth of carbs in one day! The sky didn't fall, pigs didn't fly, and i didn't gain back everything i'd lost, i only gained 3 water lbs. My rocesea (skin condition) flared up but that was it. Now I'm not nearly as hard on myself. I'm still not completely happy with my weight..i'd like to lose about 7/8 more lbs, i've upped my exercise and i keep my carbs fairly low daily (modified owl). haven't gone off plan since those two days over xmas. Those cheats aren't my 7/8 lb problem, I know that. it's exercise. i was at goal when i was running regularily, and when i stopped..i gained a bit. i've started running again (boy i hate it LOL) As long as i can control it..i will 'treat' myself once in a while, though rarely. ok I'll shutup now :-)

Re: Why do you fall off the wagon?
Thanks, Sadie and Bikergoddess! That is exactly where we all need to get our heads: Sometimes we focus too much on what we want to fix (our weaknesses) instead of playing to our strengths.
You all have strengths...each of us have things we are admired for doing so well! Play to your strengths and don't believe the lie that if you can only fix this one issue all will be well. Jesus said that in this world we will have trouble. And he walked on average 20-25 miles a day, and didn't have to face all the refined sugars and overprocessed foods and golden arches and whatever else trips us up. If HE could find trouble in HIS day, I need to resolve to myself that there is no free ticket to a stress absent life. Celebrate your accomplishments! Stop berating your weaknesses! Let's celebrate Christmas holidays this year with the attitude of Sadie!!! ((((Sadie)))) |

Re: Why do you fall off the wagon?
For me, depression was caused by unstable blood sugars. When I lost weight and was on Atkins for more than 10 days, I was doing better. Eventually my doctor was able to remove me from all medications. Still, my experience is anecdotal and not meant to serve as a medical diagnosis or advice.
(How's that for disclaimers) |
