Eat fat and lose weight?! Huh?

Did you know you can eat fat and lose weight?

For those who don't know why, this is because minus carbs in the system, fats are used for fuel and not stored as fats (and because it is difficult for the body to convert fats to fuel, you actually burn more calories converting fat to fuel than carbs which break down too easily into fuel). When there are carbs in the system, because they break down so easily in the blood stream, they are also easily converted into fat tissue and the fat is then also used as fat and not fuel. They key is to remove the carbs so that the foods which benefit your body, such as fat, proteins, vegetables and some low-glycemic fruits can be used as fuel and not as fat. It always boils down to sugars in the end.

Again, fats in the absence of sugars = fullness, satiety and the ability to lose weight effortlessly. Fat + sugars = obese America.

Yup, I'm amazed that researchers came to the conclusion that fat was the problem, not sugar... Laura

Re: Eat fat and lose weight?! Huh?

I was reading Discover magazine the other day. Researchers claim there is another sensory bit of the tongue that detects fats. The dummies are, instead of admitting, "Hey! fats are good for satiety value and bring a sensory pleasure" are trying to make a medication that shuts off those buds!

I was slapping my head.

Re: Eat fat and lose weight?! Huh?

This is just my opinion, I think we should cut down on fat and totally cut out sugar. The most weight I ever lost in a week was when I cut down on carbs AND fat. I lost 11 pounds in one week doing that, and wasn't really hungry.

So, you're asking yourself, "If it was so great, why didn't you stick with it?" I don't handle stress well and I binge. So, I have other issues with food which are mental and became a way of habit from an early age. It's hard to break that cycle. When I binge, I don't crave fat, I crave sugar. I had these issues even when I was following the Atkins plan.

Okay, now I'll take my butt to the SB forum and shut up!

Never wrestle with pigs. You just get dirty and the pigs like it too much.

There's light at the end every tunnel ........ just pray its not a train.

Have you heard of the scientist doing an experiment with a frog?

First the scientist placed the frog on a table. Then he slammed his hands on the table and yelled, "JUMP!" The frog quickly jumped.

Next, the scientist tore off the frog's front legs. Again he placed the frog on the table, slammed his hands on the table and yelled, "JUMP!" The frog jumped but not as far as before.

Then the scientist tore off the frog's hind legs. As before, he placed the frog on the table, slammed his hands on the table and yelled, "JUMP!" This time, the frog didn't jump. The scientist repeated the same procedure but the frog still didn't budge.

The scientist then started to scribble on his notebook...

"Conclusion: Without their legs, frogs cannot hear."

Re: Eat fat and lose weight?! Huh?

Piasa-- I'd even venture to say it's more than just your opinion--it's fact!

Truth is, even low-carb diets are honestly low-calorie diets. Fat, carrying more calories per unit than something low-fat, is something people want to cut if they're watching their caloric intake. And I know that even people on low-carb plans fare better the lower their calorie intake is!

For me, however, I find that when my fat % is 30, I have a hard time eating even 600-900 calories a day; conversely, when I try to go low-fat it is much easier for me to consume 1800 calories a day and still be hungry due to not feeling satisfied.

I think therein is the difference: what people need due to their insulin response to the foods being eaten determines the amount of fat that benefits them the greatest. I'm thankful that low-carb eating allows for this much introspection!

hehe, exactly. That's one of the reasons I question some people's "facts". I've been reading about animal behavior (dogs in particular) and it's amazing to me the totally different explanations 'experts' come up with for the exact same behavior patterns.

If you'll notice, the series of studies that lead to the whole low fat craze were all conducted on peoples near the equator. Where fruits were in abundance and fats less so.

The majority of Americans are from European stock, where fat is more prevalent.

A fascinating read is the Metabolic Typing Diet. It's not a one-size-fits-all diet, since people are different. I believe this is the book that points out that we can't all possibly be the same on the inside when we're so different on the outside. In fact, my mom's internal organs are 'backwards'.
