Crazy Question
Okay, if anyone affirms this comment, I will be really surprised. I have never heard anything like this, in all my years and with all the different diets I've tried.
When I first went to the doctor for the medical supervision, and was discussing my plan not with the doctor but with the clinic administrator, I said "You know, I know I'll lose weight on any diet, so long as I stick with it. It's keeping it off that's hard, which is where my behavior modification, especially towards exercise, comes in." She replied, "A lot of people think that they have to exercise. But keeping the weight off is about what you choose to eat. Exercising has nothing to do with weighloss." Whoa... |

Re: Crazy Question
I don't know what she's smoking, but I think we just legalized it here in Denver, if you know what I mean.
Sure, it always comes down to calories in versus calories out. So let's visit the "calories out" bit a mo'. *LOL* Let's say you need 1500 calories for your body to function per day. You bring in 1200 calories through what you eat. You are left with a 300 calorie excess, which translate to a pound lost every 12 days. Not much. Let's say you burn an additional 600 calories per day through exercise. With that 300 you saved through dietary changes + the 600 through exercise, you're now at an excess burn of 900 calories a day, which means you're burning a pound every 4 days, for 2 pounds a week, versus a pound every 2 weeks. And that's just the academic portion of the exercise program. We haven't EVEN discussed an increase it gives your metabolism, how it assists your resting heart rate or how it helps you actually TONE your body and elevate your mood through the endorphin releases in the brain. Some people. {{{Pam}}} |

Re: Crazy Question
Holly CRAP really I suppose in a sence she is right you don't need it to lose Weight But, why the heck wouldn't you want to. I don't wanna walk around with wrinkling skin a sagging body and being in worse shape thin then I was fat. GOD, I can't belive she said that. probably doesn't like to exercise herself so her saying that to you justifies to her that she doesn't need to exercise. Man I live for running and lifting and everything I like to see the muscles and feel the burn. It's an amazing thing how you can be so out and just start doing something and it changes your Whole Body.
Cleo you are right to question her and sure you can lose without exercise but, exercise gives you the metabolic edge, shapes you inside and out and gives tyou the body you rightly deserve for your effort. If it came as easy as watching what I ate, I would ahve been skinny long ago eating 1000 calories a day and Hypothyroid. Doesn't happen it wasn't till I did Atkins and Exercise I really began to see a huge change in myself. Exercise Does a Body good, but you know that, (((HUGS))) Sarah

Re: Crazy Question
The last time I did low carb.....maybe a couple of years ago...I lost weight, but it was slow and not a lot....but I didn't exercise, hardly at all. Now that I'm doing it again, an exercising, it's coming off faster and I feel better, more energetic. It's so hard to believe that a "doctor" would say something that stupid, when there are so many benefits to exercise, even beyond weight loss.

Re: Crazy Question
Actually, you can lose weight without exercise. And you can't lose weight with exercise alone. But if you want to lose weight on ANY weight loss plan and TONE UP that flab, then you have to exercise. Its a double-sided coin.
What's the saying? Dieting makes you look good in clothes; exercise makes you look good naked. Yep. Betty

Re: Crazy Question
LOL!
As soon as she said it (it was the administrator speaking, not the doctor) I thought "This woman is on something!!" I know from past experience that *I* cannot lose weight by my eating alone. My metabolism is woefully slow as it is, and when I don't exercise, whether I'm eating normally or dieting, it is still as low. And the weight won't come off if I don't exercise. That's why so many of my diets failed. I wasn't exercising, so with the new diet I'd lose at most about 4 pounds, then stall. Then get frustrated and say "Well, I'm at the same weight. But I'm depriving myself. If I'm going to maintain this weight, at least I should eat what I want!" So off I'd go! Now, though, I'm working on building my exercise habits so that I do a lighter morning workout (a la Richard Simmons) and a "real" one after work/school in the afternoon (30+ min. on elliptical trainer or my taebo videos). I really like it! |

Re: Crazy Question
I'm there, too! I can lose weight without exercise, but only to a point. The body has to expend energy or the truth of the matter is just that unless paying lipservice like the administrator does burns a lot of calories, she's not going to be slimming down anytime soon in a happy fashion (in other words those breastesses will be swinging low sweet chariot).

Re: Crazy Question
I had to go to a nutritionist once and she told me that butter was so bad and that I should switch to Margarine. So I asked her about transfats and she said, "we are not allowed to recommend butter because of its satfat ratio, but your right, trans fat is much worce". What a bunch of crapola...I ended our conversation and told her what I thought about her recommendations
