Re: Back on the wagon again....

Hi mary, yup summers now officially over in my eyes...once labour day is over anyway...so i'm trying to get back on track, had a summer of not enough exercise, and too many bbq's! My first challenge is a charity 10k run (my first!) next weekend.

My eating, i'm trying to stick to a sort of modified owl till then, keeping my carbs low, and watching my calories a bit too. At the stage i'm at a regular induction no longer seems to work for me (i gained last time i tried it..too many cals from fat i think).

I've been up about 8-10 lbs for quite a while now and have really struggled with it..i just can't seem to find a good balance for myself.

How are you doing on SB? I did try it and really enjoyed the foods, unfortunately I did'nt lose on that either. Though i tend to get a bit lazy over the summer.

I'm thinking for me a mix of atkins low carb, and the lower sat fats of SB are a good mix.

I'm not going to weigh myself for this challeng (haven't for 3 months..i don't wanna be a scale slave again) but i can say i have a pair of jeans that did fit, that although i can still get them on..are far too tigh to wear (that is if i wanna sit down!) i'm hoping to get into them by halloween.

I have measured instead of weighed, i've gained 1" on my hips, waist and bust, which is quite a bit. My goal is to lose that inch!

Re: Back on the wagon again....

I know what you mean about the bbq's... way too many...

I don't know if I'm doing a strict SB... more or less just cutting back... but I'm down 3 pounds since Monday... woo hoo... 14 more til I'm back to where I was....

Good Luck & check in..... keep me posted on how you're doing...

Re: Back on the wagon again....

Hi Mary and Sadie
Ive kinda fallen off the wagon myself the last month.Just mostly getting frustrated with slow if any loss and making the wrong food choices.Which of coarse never helped matters any.Im just not sure anymore what plan to use.I absolutly LOVE SB but im not having any big major losses with it for some reason.I did awesome on Atkins, but im afraid to go back to that way of eating again and gain instead of lose. I still believe the answer me for is SB but i seem to screw it up .I dont stock my cupboards up till saturday so i need to make a decision soon i guess.I know ive gained i can feel it the way my jeans fit on my legs.I always gain in my legs first im really odd Im not going to wiegh till next week since monthly time is around the corner.
Good luck to you both!!

Re: Back on the wagon again....

Hi Deb!!! Glad to see you!

I know how hard it is to decide which plan to use... I think some of us have tried them all and then start to struggle... I know I am! Could you do a modified and just do what works best for you?

Keep us posted on how you're doing! Good Luck!

Re: Back on the wagon again....

Hi Deb! I know exactly where you're coming from I'm sorry SB wasn't working as well for you either. I loved the foods too! I'm doing what mary mentioned..kind of a modified low carb now. instead of doing induction, i'm doing induction level carbs, but lower fat and a couple of things added that normally wouldn't be..like yogurt. I know that in maintainance I had to keep my fats down..that was actually my downfall. last summer came and i started eating too many high fat meats etc and i started to see a gain. too much fat and too many carbs i guess (since my level was higher than).

I always gain on my legs first too and feel it in my jeans...i can feel them tight on my thighs before i feel them tight anywhere else.

to try to stay motivated I keep telling myself this is a lifelong plan, and I shouldn't expect to find the perfect balance overnight..i'm better to take my time, ba patient and find the perfect woe that I can live with..no matter what it is!

Another thing I've considered is doing atkins level carbs during the week, then SB on the weekends, ie just including maybe one/two grains etc for a couple of days and not worry about the carbs. I do think grains are very important..and that might be enough to keep my metobolism from becoming stagnant? Kinda like carb cycling?

Mary I think curves had a plan like this don't they? a 3 day thing?

Re: Back on the wagon again....

Curves has a 'tune-up' for when you hit a stall, you eat high carbs for a couple of days until you gain 3 lbs., then you go back on plan til you loose the 3 lbs., you do this going back & forth until it takes 2 weeks eating high carbs before you gain the weight back... it does work at jump starting your metabolism... but from the sounds of it, none of us need to do that, we all need to just get back on track and kick ourselves in the butt!

I agree with telling yourself that this is life-long... I actually have a GOOD reason this time.. my cholesterol is high and now I'm on meds for it, so the has to be life-long changes for me!

Re: Back on the wagon again....

Thanks guys , im not sure yet what my plan is but i will for sure keep you posted.Im also very very interested in your progress.I still think SB could work for me if i tweaked it some , problem is im not sure what my problem is when im in phase one i do well the minute i go into phase two i seem to lose control or something???Even if it is all healthy food.Im tempted to just not have grains ever! Or every other day or something.

Re: Back on the wagon again....

Deb... please know that you're not alone!!!! I know EXACTLY what you mean!!! Every plan I've tried... Atkins, Curves, SB... as soon as I start adding things back, I slowly go nuts and eventually fall of the wagon! That's why I'm thinking that I shouldn't cut everything and do a clean induction, just go straight to having the grains everyday, if my body is never deprived, maybe I'll do better... does that make sense? I'll let you know how I do... as soon as I get on the right track..I do good all day but then I come home.. tonight it was the brownies my son made, just a small piece, then my little cook made home fries.. he loves to cook! Ok, how do you tell your 12 year old that you're not eating what he made for you? So, I've been really struggling lately and I start each day good and then fall off when I come home... so I've got some tweeking to do myself!

Re: Back on the wagon again....

Well, I may be new around here: but I certainly understand your sentiments! I cannot believe I am back over 200 pounds... I felt so great in the 170s ... and now here I am. Time to kick it back into gear, girlfriends. I am looking forward to the days when I can say my first goal is a 10k! Wow, Sadie! I need to map out my walking program for the next four weeks ... I gotta start with baby steps!

We can do it, girlfriends ... it sounds like we have all lost weight before, we can do it again!

Re: Back on the wagon again....

Hi LibertyJen and welcome! Here is a great site for calculating distance for walks and runs..you can log them as well. http://www.mapmyrun.com/ if you haven't used it you just input your address on the left hand side and it will find your neighbourhood.

How's it going ladies? I've been really good the past couple of weeks, i'm feeling a tiny bit thinner, i even tried on some jeans while cleaning out my closet last night (some i've been afraid to go near for months!), i could pretty much do them all up..though there still a little tighter than i'd like!

I have my 10k Terry Fox run this weekend, i'm sort of exited and nervous all at the same time!

Re: Back on the wagon again....

WOW! Sadie, I am so excited to hear you are doing a 10K! My neighbor is training for a 10K right now ... and I would love to join her in these smaller runs next summer. I haven't run since high school ... which was much longer ago than I want to admit! Thanks for the website about the distances ... I will definitely use that one!

The more help the merrier!!! I sat down last night and planned out my next week ... and I order some new workout DVDs on eBay ... hoping to jump start my results. Still feelin' like a slug ... and I am going to regain control!

Re: Back on the wagon again....

How's it going everyone???

I did do my run, but only did about 7k of it..rather than 10. Kinda chickened out . It was a charity run not race so you could choose whatever distance you wanted..I settled on less to be on the safe side.

I'm going to measure tomorrow, i've been really good the past month so i'm hoping to see a bit off loss in inches. FOr anyone that doesn't know I already reached goal (120) last year..stayed there for 9 months, then for some reason gained 8-10 lbs (and 1" in measurements). I didn't go off of low carb, I think maybe too many calories did me in. I've tried everything to get this weight/inches off. I'm trying to stay away from the scale, as I tend to become obsessed with it and the numbers depress me. For the past 4 months or so i've been going on strictly how my clothes feel and my measurements. I've tried everyting from going back to induction..to South beach. No luck. Now i'm doing low carb and watching calories.

Something I find interesting...my weight seems to bother me more now than it every did when i was at my heaviest. I didn't obsess over it or get as depressed about it as I do now. I'm not sure why my mindset has changed..maybe because i'm working so hard with no results?

Anyway..sorry for the rant..just a bit frustrated..maybe the tape measure will give me some good news..though i'm not very optomistic.

On top of running i'll be going back to the gym tomorrow, been away from there for a bit.

Re: Back on the wagon again....

So, it's been a long time since anyone posted to this thread... thought I'd bump it back up because it's a good one.

Yep, I'm back on the wagon again. Doing it a little different this time. Trying good carbs that are low in the glycemic index, kind of a modified Nutrisystems Nourish plan. I got their foods for a month and saw what it was like, then compared labels and was able to find suitable subs at the grocery store. So far it's working for me pretty well. Down 14 lbs in 3 weeks and 1 day, and really just put exercise back into the equation a couple of days ago.

Any particular plan, or just low carb in general?

Re: Back on the wagon again....

How do you track your carbs? I'm just curious, really. I mean, do you go by any rules, or just figure that if it's meat and fats that it's ok? Seriously, I'm curious... (I'm not messing with you....I just want to know how you know what's good to eat, and what's not)

Re: Back on the wagon again....

Curves tells you to just count carbs... induction is less than 20 carbs a day. I don't count fat but I try to watch the types of fats that I eat. Try to stay away from the frankenfoods. I basically try to stick to.... veggies, white meat or fat trimmed meats, cheese, eggs. I do have other things here and there but I really do try to keep it to foods that are better for me. I don't want to eat hot dogs all day because they are low carb... know what I mean?

Hot Dogs? Yuck... Frankenfoods to the max... yuck!!! Too many junk things in those for me. I'd much rather have a real good burger, without the bun, anytime. Sorry... If it works for you, then I guess it's ok... but, it wouldn't work for me. Give me whole meats with lots of proteins and some real fats, and a salad with it and I'm good. I have to look really hard at any processed foods (hotdogs, summer sausage, etc...) before I'll eat them.
